Evening came and I was totally settled in my new home. Agatha had come home about thirty minutes ago. Once she was done freshening up, she came to join me at table for dinner. Over dinner, she told me Harvey Mudd College Claremont, CA was the name of the school I gained admission into. She made me understand she assigned a bodyguard and a maid to me.
As a typical Nigerian Yoruba girl, I was used to none of those so I asked her if she could just let me live a normal life. Then she said “you’re here for more than what you think” I did not understand that and I asked her to explain yet she smiled at me and told me to finish up my dinner.
I was done with dinner and was about watching television as I always did back in Nigeria after dinner. As I turned on the television, Agatha told me it was bedtime because I had to be up early to prepare for school.
I was so furious because I felt like I was being controlled when I hadn’t even spent a night in the States so I began to imagine how my stay there will look like.
I left for my room immediately and banged my door. I said my normal prayers and fell asleep.
It was just 5:00 am and I heard bells chime and at the same time, I heard a knock on my door. I was still very sleepy so I ignored all of that.
The knock became louder and so irritating, so I opened my door and found out it was Agatha who had been knocking.
Then she said “get ready for school; the driver will be ready in twenty minutes so should you”. Then a voice in my head said “ this one na serious matter oh”.
That didn’t bother me. I was obedient so I did exactly as she said. In fifteen minutes, I was ready. Yet I wondered how and why somebody will leave for school on an empty stomach.
As I got into the car, the driver took off like a rocket. I was not used to such speed yet I did not say a word. Moreover, I got to school safe and sound.
While in the car, I admired the beautiful infrastructure of my college and it was more than what I used to see in the movies. I was not done admiring but the driver told me to step down and have a nice day. I did like he said but I could not seem to fathom why everyone was behaving so formal with me since the previous day.
As I walked down the corridor, all eyes were on me. They all stared at me so much that I almost tripped. Just before I stepped into my classroom, a boy approached me and introduced himself as Duce. When I looked up, I saw beauty personified.
